The Lake County Health Department has been receiving complaints from parents of children attending schools within our jurisdiction concerning the quarantining of unmasked close contact children who have been exposed to children infected with the COVID virus.
We would like to take this opportunity to clarify the Governor's Executive Order 21-32, 5. (COVID-19 Control Measures for Institutions and Congregate Care Facilities).
Unmasked students and staff who have become "close contacts" must complete the required quarantine. Students and staff that were exposed to a positive case, within three (3) feet in the classroom setting or six (6) feet outside of the classroom setting, shall quarantine for fourteen (14) days (no test needed) or ten (10) days after the date of last exposure, following additional precautions for days 11-14 or seven (7) days after date of last exposure with a negative PCR test result occurring on day 5 or later, following additional precautions for days 8-14.
Therefore, all unmasked close contact students and staff shall complete the required quarantine period.
The Lake County Health Department supports the current CDC and Indiana Department of Health COVID control guidelines. We strongly recommend that all schools follow the masking, contact tracing and quarantining practices described in the guidelines.
Due to increase of COVID cases, starting on Sept. 7th, 2021, immunizations will be administered by appointment only.
Free COVID-19 testing at Polk Elementary School in Lake Station each Tuesday though Saturday from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM.
